The first inhabitants of Jamaica probably came from islands to the east in two waves of migration. About 600 ce the culture known as the “Redware people” arrived; little is known of them, however, beyond the red pottery they left. They were followed about 800 by the Arawakan -speaking Taino, who eventually settled throughout the island. It is a story of resilience and diversity, written by Jamaicans who are world changers and global luminaries. Christopher Columbus landed in Jamaica on May 4, 1494. In his log, he described Jamaica as "the fairest island that eyes have beheld: mountains and the land seem to touch the sky…all full of valleys and fields and plains.” The history of Jamaica over the past 500 years has been marked by the courage of the Jamaican people in their triumphant struggle for freedom and justice and by their unrelenting resistance and determination in the face of adversity and discrimination.
